Amber
ends stellar competitive career;
will remain involved with the sport
From
The United States Figure Skating Association
2004 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships
pewter medalist Amber Corwin announced her retirement
from competitive figure skating today after a decade
on the international circuit.
Corwin
has competed at the U.S. Championships on the senior
level since 1995, when she placed 16th. Since that
year she has placed in the top 10 every year minus
one.
Corwin
has also competed at the Four Continents Figure Skating
Championships five times, winning the silver medal
in 1999 and bronze in
2004. She has been a member of the U.S. National Team
since 1996.
Corwin
plans to stay involved with the figure skating community
in multiple ways, including retaining her post on
the U.S. Figure Skating Board of Directors
and the Athletes Advisory Committee.
I
would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone
at U.S. Figure
Skating for the many years of support throughout my
career, Corwin said. I thank everyone
for all of my experiences and look back on my career
with
a huge smile. I have skated with and met so many incredible
people throughout my journeys and have learned so
much about culture and
sportsmanship.
Corwin
graduated from California State University, Long Beach,
in December 2004 with a degree in fashion merchandising
and marketing. She is pursuing a career as a stylist.
She is also skating in numerous benefit shows and
exhibitions. In addition, Corwin is considering becoming
a technical specialist next spring in time for the
2007-08 season.
I
think anytime you start something new its a
little bit scary, Corwin said. Im
actually looking for more consistency and a more secure
job, and to be able to do all those things on the
side. Im really excited to start a new chapter
in my life. Looking at my career, I couldnt
have done much more. Im really happy with it
and ready for change.
Throughout
her many international events, including the Grand
Prix Series over five different seasons, Corwin has
traveled to Austria, Canada, China, Japan, France,
Germany and Russia, among other countries. Though
she never competed at a World Figure Skating Championships
or Olympic Winter Games, Corwin has no regrets.
Ive
had my ups and downs with my mental state and staying
tough, but I think Ive been able to come back
after rough years, Corwin said. I actually
had my best nationals at the end of my career, proving
I can really persevere through difficulties. Because
Im a well-rounded person and skater, even though
I havent been to Worlds or the Olympics Ive
still been given so many opportunities to do different
things, that maybe, that was my thing.
Her
competitive skating days may be over, but dont
expect Corwin to become
a stranger. Doing all the competitions, I just
think Ive been so grateful to work with incredible
athletes and judges, and (to develop) so many incredible
relationships that will last forever, Corwin
said.
"Im
definitely not going to be out of the picture, Im
just ready to do my own thing.

Corwin
expresses confidence
in new figure skating routine
By
Lois Elfman
Hermosa
Beach, California figure skater Amber Corwin began
her 11th season October 2 with a seventh place finish
at the Campbells International Figure Skating
Classic in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Corwin,
who finished fourth at the 2004 U.S. Figure Skating
Championships in January, said she was pleased with
her performance.
I
feel I have an added confidence and more experience
under my belt, said Corwin, 25. Its
the strongest Ive been at this time of the season,
thanks to more off-ice training, more belief in myself,
my coachs belief in me, strong programs and
good outfits.
Corwin
debuted her new free skating program, choreographed
by Cindy Stuart, and a costume by Emmy-winning designer
Jef Billings.
Based
on suggestions from the international judges at St.
Paul, Corwin and coach Charlene Wong have made some
minor modifications to their free skating program,
which is set to music from Kismet.
I
always feel much better after the first competition
is done each year, Corwin said. It builds
confidence once you get through it in front of judges
and an audience. Then you can make little edits to
the program.
Corwin
will compete Nov. 4-7 at the NHK Trophy in Nagoya,
Japan, and then at Trophée Eric Bompard in
Paris, France, Nov. 19-21. She hopes her placements
at those two events will earn her a berth in the Grand
Prix Final, to be held in Beijing, China, Dec. 16-19.
The
2005 U.S. Figure Skating Championships will take place
Jan. 9-16 in Portland, Oregon, where her goal is improve
on her 2004 placement.
Recently,
Corwin performed in An Evening With Champions
at Harvard University to benefit the Jimmy Fund at
the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Doing
shows helps when you get in competition, she
said. It helps you capture a certain mood. Ive
been able to relax more in competition now that Ive
done so many shows.
Corwin
moved with her family to Hermosa Beach when she was
12. An active rollerblader, beach volleyball player
and body surfer, Corwin trains using Pilates methods
and dance classes so that her body remains dexterous
and can move in different directions.
Her
father Pat, a principal at Ridgecrest Elementary School
in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, said When
many competitors were dropping out of school that
was not an option for us.
In
December, Corwin will graduate from Cal State University
Long Beach, where she is majoring in fashion merchandizing
and marketing.
Its
nice to be able to have that done and be able to concentrate
on training for the Olympic year, she said.
Amber

Amber
appeared in Minnesota Sept. 2 to help promote the
Campbell's International Figure Skating Classic, which

Campbell's Classic.
She
did a number of live spots for the local ABC, CBS
and NBC stations, talking about skating in general
and the upcoming Classic.
She
also stopped by a local rink to skate with members
of the St. Paul FSC. While there, she skated with
fellow Team USA member Ben Miller.
That
evening, Amber was at the Xcel Energy Center which
was hosting the World Cup of Hockey tournament. She
was introduced during the USA vs. Russia game and
later signed autographs for fans.
