Johnny to train with Tarasova

Johnny Weir looking forward to new season.
Johnny Weir will begin training with Tatiana Tarasova in Simsbury, Conn., beginning July 1.

Weir worked out with Tarasova for two days in the spring in an introductory session. He enjoyed the experience with Tarasova and the quality ice time and Tarasova liked the Russian skating qualities of Weir.

“I’m very excited and apprehensive. I’ve been away from home but I’m excited,” Weir said.

Tarasova will choreograph Weir’s short program during the preliminary three-month stay in Simsbury. “I’m not sure what I’m skating too yet,” Weir said. “I like mainly Russian music and fun choreography. I have a couple of ideas and Tatiana has some.” Weir will keep his long program skated to Dr. Zhivago last season choreographed by Juzzepe Arena. However Weir will perform in a new costume.

Weir said he was not severing ties with Priscilla Hill, the only coach he has had. The plan is to work with Tarasova through September. “I just want a new perspective on my skating. I haven’t had a lot of outside influences. When I was up there earlier (Tarasova) fixed my jumping in two days a lot. I’ve always admired the Russian way in doing things in skating. They are super confident and get what they want.”

Weir said he is learning as much Russian as possible in the remaining days before the move. “I’m trying to learn some Russian so I can communicate. I can tell Tatiana is very intense. I know the sessions will be
more intense than I’ve had in the past.”

Weir will also do some coaching at Simsbury to supplement his income and help pay for the move. “I didn’t think I would do well telling other people how to fix things. I am a little introverted to an extent. But I’ve enjoyed the coaching part because I find myself learning more about myself teaching other skaters.”
